Best free QR code generators in 2026: what stays free after you print

A small-business owner on r/smallbusiness printed 500 business cards, then found out the free QR code on them wanted $15 a month to keep resolving. The code had not broken. It had been switched off.

That is the only failure mode that matters in the hunt for the best free QR code generator, and it has one cause. Dynamic codes point at a vendor’s redirect domain, so the vendor decides how long they live. A static code carries the destination URL inside the pattern, with no server in the middle and nothing to deactivate.

We tested every tool on this page ourselves on August 7, 2026, and we sell nothing here. Jotform’s roundup ranks Jotform first. TrueQRCode calls itself “Best Overall” while offering a 10-day trial. Our methodology is published.

The three kinds of free QR code generator

Three different products are sold under the word “free” in this market, and only one of them cannot be taken back.

Free static, permanent by design. The destination URL is encoded directly in the pattern. There is no redirect and nothing to switch off. QR Code Monkey’s X account answers publicly that static codes do not expire, and Adobe says the same in its FAQ.

We decoded the outputs of QR Code Monkey and Oh My Code ourselves on August 7, 2026. Each contained the destination URL, nothing else.

Free dynamic with honest limits. The printed code points at a vendor redirect domain, and the vendor promises to keep resolving it. Hovercode gives 3 codes for life with no scan cap. Flowcode gives 2 with a lifetime scan promise. Canva calls its codes “valid forever” and forces its own logo into the middle of them.

These are real offers. They are also services, and a service can end.

“Free” that is a trial or an ad business. QRfy locks your codes when the 7-day trial ends, QR.io pauses them on the same schedule, and QR Code Generator by Bitly deactivates at day 14. QRStuff free dynamic codes die at 30 days or 50 scans. ME-QR stays free by showing interstitial ads to the people scanning your code.

One line to keep: static codes do not expire, dynamic codes get deactivated. A QR code either points at your data, or at a host that redirects to your data. The second arrow is the one someone else owns.

The table and ranking that follow are ordered for the free use case, not by global score.

*ME-QR's "unlimited" free codes display interstitial ads to the person scanning. Tools with no free tier at all (trial-only) are excluded from this table; see the pricing index for their entry prices.

1. QR Code Monkey: the free static default, no account needed

No signup, no watermark, and a scannable file on your desktop in under a minute.

We ran it on August 7, 2026. Static codes are free with no account. We downloaded a 1155px PNG, decoded it ourselves, and the pattern resolved straight to our test URL.

SVG, PDF and EPS exports come on the same free tier, which matters more than PNG size when you hand artwork to a printer. Fourteen content types, including WiFi and vCard. Analytics: none.

It is also the reflex answer for people who have just been burned, and the tool the replies recommend in the r/graphic_design thread on an expensive lock-in lesson.

The limits are real. Static only means no editing after printing and no scan data, ever. The “dynamic” and “statistics” buttons lead to a separate paid platform, a detail the tutorials rarely mention, and the interface carries ads for that Pro product.

Best for anyone printing a code that points at a URL they control. Skip it if you will need to change that destination after the print run.

2. Oh My Code: the highest resolution free static export we measured

3020px against QR Code Monkey’s 1155px. That is the widest PNG export gap we measured between two free static tools, and it matters when a printer asks for raster rather than vector.

Verified August 7, 2026. Static codes are free without an account, the page states no expiry upfront, and the free export includes a 3020px PNG plus SVG. We decoded the output and got our destination URL back. Twelve content types, no watermark.

Two things to weigh against that. The content type list is shorter than QR Code Monkey’s, 12 against 14, and there is no EPS export. Dynamic codes here are paid: a 14-day trial, then $4.99 a month, with lifetime plans at $59 and $169. That trial is the same countdown we flag further down this page, and it applies here as much as anywhere.

We found no user reports on Oh My Code in the Reddit, Product Hunt or Trustpilot material we collected, so this entry rests on our own export and decode test. Details in our Oh My Code review.

Against QR Code Monkey: the same free static deal at nearly three times the PNG resolution, with two fewer content types and no EPS.

3. Adobe Express: free static codes Adobe says never expire

Almost nobody in this market will put “never expire” in writing. Adobe does, in its own FAQ, on a tool that costs nothing on any plan including the free one.

We verified this one from Adobe’s own pages on August 7, 2026, not hands-on. The generator produces static codes from a URL, and only a URL: no WiFi codes, no vCard. Downloads are PNG, JPG and PDF per Adobe’s documentation, and there are no analytics.

One discrepancy is worth stating rather than smoothing over. A January 2026 tutorial sponsored by Adobe shows an SVG export from the quick action inside the Express editor, while Adobe’s own feature page lists PNG, JPG and PDF. Formats appear to differ by entry point, and we have not tested either path ourselves, so we are not going to tell you which one you will get.

Designers in r/graphic_design point burned users here as the safe, non-sketchy option.

The verdict: the safest brand-name choice for a URL code going straight into a design. The export ceiling only costs you if you are printing large.

4. Chrome and Edge: the free QR generator you already have

Google sells no standalone QR product. The honest answer to “is Google’s QR code generator free” is that Chrome’s built-in one is, and it has been in your address bar the whole time.

Click the share icon in the address bar or right-click the page, and Chrome hands you a static PNG. Edge does the same, and most mobile browsers will turn any page into a QR from the share sheet.

Chrome stamps a small dinosaur in the center of the code, which rules it out for client work. No account, no third party, no analytics, no design control.

On r/smallbusiness it is the answer people give someone who has just been burned: there is nothing to switch off.

For Google review codes, feed your Business review link into any free static generator, and know that iPhone users without Google Maps get bounced to the App Store mid-flow.

If you need one code, once, for a page that is already open, right-click and you are done.

5. QRzie and offline tools: the safest way to make a QR code

Ask which QR code generator is safest and most articles answer with a brand. The better answer is a mechanism: the safest generator is the one that never sees your URL.

QRzie does the encoding in your browser and states that nothing is sent to a server, documented on their own site and read on August 7, 2026. It is free with no account, static only, 8 content types, and it shows an ad when you open the download. It is also run by one individual in Romania, which is worth knowing. The site could disappear tomorrow and the codes you already generated would keep working, because they never depended on it.

The same logic runs deeper offline. InDesign generates codes natively under Object > Generate QR Code. Affinity and Inkscape do it too. Zint Barcode Studio and the qrencode command line tool are free and open source.

All of them encode your URL directly, with no third party in the chain.

That is the designer consensus after a lock-in burn, and u/ReallyQuiteConfused put the reason plainly on r/smallbusiness when recommending Zint: no redirects, no trackers, unless you add them yourself.

Best for privacy-sensitive work, regulated environments and anything going to mass print. Skip it if you want a designed, colored code in two clicks.

6. Hovercode: 3 free dynamic codes for life, no scan cap

Everything above this line is a code nobody can switch off. Everything below it is a service that promises not to. Read the next three entries that way.

Hovercode is the best of them: editable destinations and scan counts, with no card and no countdown. Checked August 7, 2026. The free plan gives 3 dynamic codes for life, no scan cap, no watermark, and no ads shown to the person scanning.

Unlimited free static codes come on top. Hosting is in Frankfurt, which matters for GDPR. You can generate a code and see the output before creating an account.

The ceiling is three codes, and Hovercode is smaller than the majors. The residual risk is the one every dynamic code carries, including this one: it is a service, and a service can stop existing.

We found no user reports on Hovercode, so this entry rests on our own check of their published pages.

What separates it from the trap section below is not generosity, it is a published permanent offer instead of a 7-day trial wearing the word free.

The verdict: the free dynamic tier we would put on a printed asset, as long as three codes covers the job.

7. Flowcode: 2 free dynamic codes with a lifetime scan promise

You printed 5,000 flyers with the wrong link. Every route to fixing it seems to start at $25 a month.

Flowcode’s free plan does not. Checked August 7, 2026: 2 dynamic codes, an explicit lifetime scans promise, ad-free, with analytics capped at 500 scans. Paid plans start at $25 a month billed annually.

One caveat we are attributing rather than adopting: Jotform’s testing reports Flowcode branding on free-tier codes. We did not verify branding either way, so treat it as unverified and check before you commit artwork.

Two free codes is a hard ceiling, and the step up is the steepest in this list.

The lifetime promise is what separates Flowcode and Hovercode from the platforms in the next section. It is still a business decision a company can change, but it is a published one, which is more than QRfy or QR.io offer.

Against Hovercode: one fewer free code, a larger company behind the promise, a more expensive exit if you outgrow the free tier.

8. Canva: free dynamic codes with a logo you cannot remove

The code is free forever. It will also carry someone else’s logo in the middle of your flyer for exactly that long.

Verified August 7, 2026. Canva’s free dynamic codes are described as valid forever, and the destination stays editable through the QR app after creation. The Canva logo is forced into the center of the pattern, and paying for Pro does not remove it. Analytics are reserved for Business and Enterprise, and codes are URL-only with an account required.

Canva is the only major tool we tested that watermarks the code itself rather than the page around it.

The path is short and well documented: Apps, search “QR code”, pick the app by Canva, paste the link, generate. WebsitePlanet’s walkthrough confirms no Pro is needed, and a Cricut crafting channel uses the same route for vinyl work, calling the codes permanent, which matches Canva’s own wording.

Both tutorials stop before printing to say the same thing: keep contrast high and scan-test on two devices. We expand that check below.

Best for a code that lives inside a Canva design where the logo is acceptable. Skip it for packaging, signage, or anywhere a third-party logo in your artwork is a problem.

The ones to be careful with

These tools are not numbered. Only tools we would print with get a number here. Four of them switch your codes off on a specific day, each publishing that day in its own help center. Neither competing roundup mentions any of them.

QR Tiger. Its homepage generator defaults to Static and PNG, but clicking Download sent us to the pricing page. Reproduced twice on August 7, 2026, screenshot on file. The actual free tier is 3 dynamic codes at 500 scans each, account required, and their FAQ states paid codes stop working when the plan expires. More in our QR Tiger review.

QRfy. Codes become inaccessible the moment the 7-day trial ends, then are stored for three months, per QRfy’s own support article. No monthly billing exists, only 3, 6 and 12-month commitments at 19 to 39 EUR a month, and renewals cannot be canceled once processed. The full mechanics are in our QRFY review.

QR.io. “Dynamic QR codes will be paused” at the end of the 7-day trial, per their help center. One plan, $39.99 a month or $350 a year. Product Hunt: 1.1 out of 5 across 26 reviews, including an owner who had printed 1,000 cards. Our QR.io review has the receipts.

QR Code Generator by Bitly (formerly Egoditor, qr-code-generator.com). A 14-day trial, after which codes are deactivated and redirected to a service page, per their own support site. Trustpilot: 1.5 out of 5 across more than 9,200 reviews. A Reddit account describes being charged $121 where $15 a month was expected.

ME-QR. Not a trial trap, a different trade. Free unlimited, up to 10,000 dynamic codes, financed by interstitial ads shown to the people scanning them. Removing ads costs 8.64 EUR a month for a single code; genuinely ad-free is 13.83 EUR a month, rechecked August 10, 2026. Your customers pay for that, not you.

QRStuff. Free dynamic codes expire at 30 days with a 50-scan cap, and one missed renewal deactivates every code on the account, including codes printed years earlier, per QRStuff’s own blog.

Scanova runs the same 14-day trial, but states the deactivation upfront in its FAQ and keeps statics free forever. The trial is not the problem. Hiding it is.

How to check a free QR code before you print

Two minutes of checking catches a hostage code before the print run, not after.

1. Scan the downloaded file yourself. Use your phone, then a second device, before the artwork leaves your desk.
2. Read the URL the scanner shows you. If it shows qr.io/xyz, qrco.de/xyz or any vendor short domain instead of your own, someone else can switch that code off. This step separates static from dynamic faster than any pricing page.
3. Run the determinism test. Generate the same URL in two different free static generators and compare the images. A genuine static code is a deterministic encoding of the URL, so the patterns should match. A mismatch means one of them wrapped your URL in a redirect. The trick comes from u/modsuperstar on r/graphic_design, and it is how we confirmed on August 7, 2026 that the QR Code Monkey and Oh My Code outputs really were static.
4. Search the pricing and FAQ pages before adopting any dynamic tool. Look for “trial”, “deactivate”, “pause” and any scan limit. Then ask five questions: what happens to my codes if the plan ends, is there a scan cap, can I export my codes, what do the review pages say about codes that stopped working, and does this business model profit when my print run is held hostage.
5. Keep a record. One line per code: destination URL, tool, date created, where it was printed.

Then the print side. Keep contrast high, dark on light, and leave the quiet zone intact. Never crop the code or lay anything over it. Keep customization simple, because decorative shapes fail on older Android cameras, and test at the size the code will be printed.
