A small business buys a QR code the way it buys a door sign: once, ideally, and without a procurement process. We applied three filters to every tool we track. The cost has to be knowable in advance, including billing periods and any price that requires a sales call. The code has to survive the subscription question, so we separate trials from permanent free allowances and one-time plans. And the day-to-day has to be light: no enterprise onboarding, no demo calls. Oh My Code is our pick for most small businesses that need editable codes and analytics. Advanced analytics start on the $4.99 tier, editable codes need a paid plan after the 14-day trial, and the $59 and $169 lifetime plans cap what a printed code can cost. Free static codes need no account and carry no watermark; we downloaded and decoded one. Reports, the API and the end of the trial were not tested.

Hovercode: the free start on editable codes

Hovercode gives three dynamic codes free for life, with no scan cap, no QR watermark and no ads shown to people who scan, per its published pages, although its hosted pages may keep Hovercode branding; generating needs no signup, but saving or tracking codes takes an account. That can cover a menu, a review link and a WiFi code. Pro costs 11 EUR a month for 100 codes; per its FAQ, codes beyond the free three expire if you cancel. Scanova: the clearest pricing grid

Scanova publishes its full tier grid. The entry tier costs $5 a month, billed yearly only ($60 up front), with unlimited scans; monthly billing starts at $15 on Lite, and $150 buys a single code once. QR Code Monkey: free static codes for print

QR Code Monkey fits menus, review links and packaging whose link never changes. Free, with no account or watermark, it lists SVG, PDF and EPS exports. The PNG we decoded held our link directly. QR Tiger: the widest feature set

QR Tiger suits a need for many QR types: its documented catalog has 25, including GS1 Digital Link, and its bulk and API products are priced separately. Those capabilities are not exclusive to QR Tiger. Per its FAQ, the free plan includes three dynamic codes capped at 500 scans each, and paid dynamic codes stop working when the plan expires. In August, without an account, its homepage download button led us to the pricing page; downloads worked after we signed up on September 29. The offers to think twice about

The pattern that hurts small businesses is specific: print during a trial, then find the code stops working until you pay. Per their own help pages, QRFY locks codes when its 7-day trial ends, QR.io pauses them on the same schedule, and QR Code Generator by Bitly deactivates them at day 14. ME-QR’s free tier shows interstitial ads to the people scanning your code, so on a counter or a menu your customers see an ad before your page. Before printing, check whether the offer requires payment after a trial or puts advertising between a scan and your destination. Those are different trade-offs. Frequently asked questions

Do small businesses need dynamic QR codes?

Only if a printed code might ever need a new destination: a menu that moves, a booking page that changes, a campaign you want to measure. Dynamic codes make that possible and add scan counts, but they depend on a provider keeping its redirect active. Options include permanent free allowances, subscriptions and one-time plans; check the specific expiry policy. A static code needs no redirect service from the generator, although its destination must remain available.

What should a small business budget for QR codes?

Zero for static codes. For paid dynamic QR plans, use the pricing index to compare monthly and annual billing within the same currency. Each price has its own verification date. This English index displays USD, with indicative conversions marked ≈ and a dated exchange rate. Some entry plans require a commitment even when a higher tier offers monthly billing. Two vendors sell one-time plans: Oh My Code at $59 and $169, and Scanova at $150 for a single code (read August 10, 2026).

What is the biggest mistake small businesses make with QR codes?

Printing a dynamic trial code. Several tools lock or pause codes created during a free trial until you subscribe, which their own help pages document, and the printed cards, menus or labels stop resolving. Before anything goes to print, scan the file, read which domain the scanner shows, and check the vendor's FAQ for the words trial, pause and deactivate.
