The verdict

Based on our 7-criteria testing grid, the best QR code generator overall in 2026 is Oh My Code (8.2/10). A design-first QR generator whose pricing does the opposite of the market's expiring-free-code trick: static stays free forever, dynamic is honestly paid, and lifetime plans cap the cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?

A static QR code encodes its destination directly and works forever, but the destination can never change. A dynamic QR code points to a short redirect link, so you can edit the destination after printing and track scans, but it depends on the provider staying online and, usually, on a paid plan.

Are free QR code generators really free?

Static codes from reputable free generators work forever. The common trap is dynamic codes on 'free' plans: several providers deactivate them after a trial window and ask for a subscription to reactivate them. Our trust score tracks exactly this behavior for every tool we test.

Do QR codes expire?

The QR code image itself never expires. What can expire is the redirect service behind a dynamic code: if the provider shuts the link down (or paywalls it), the code stops working. Static codes have no such dependency.

How do we rank QR code generators?

Every tool is scored 0 to 10 on seven weighted criteria: pricing and value, trust and transparency, ease of use, design, dynamic features, analytics, and support. Each score is backed by a dated observation. The full grid is public on our methodology page.
