Uniqode vs QR Code Monkey (2026): the platform or the file

Published · Page updated · By QRBench Editorial

The verdict

Choose QR Code Monkey for a free static code you will not need to edit: we downloaded and decoded its output without an account or watermark. Choose Uniqode for editable destinations and the deepest analytics we have scored.

QR Code Monkey has no scan analytics. Uniqode starts at $9 a month billed yearly, about $108 upfront, and requires an account. Static codes need their destination to remain available; dynamic codes also depend on the provider.

This is less a head-to-head than a category boundary. Uniqode sells the deepest dynamic QR platform we score, on subscription, behind an account. QR Code Monkey gives away permanent static codes with no account at all, and sells nothing of its own. They collide only because both answer the same search: which QR generator should I use?

The right choice follows from one question, and the rest of this page is the supporting evidence: will the destination behind the code ever need to change?

What each one is

QR Code Monkey, operated from Germany, makes static codes. The destination is encoded in the pattern, so there is no redirect, no server and nothing between the person scanning and your page. We ran it on August 7, 2026: a 1155px PNG downloaded with no account, decoded by us, carrying our test URL and nothing else, with no watermark. Fourteen content types, deep design options, and vector exports (SVG, PDF, EPS) on the free tier.

Uniqode, formerly Beaconstac, sells dynamic codes: the pattern points at a Uniqode redirect, which is what makes the destination editable and every scan countable. Around that sit more than 20 code types including a multimedia QR that puts audio, video or files up to 50 MB behind one code (shipped July 17, 2026), bulk generation, an API, digital business cards, and an MCP connector that lets an AI assistant manage codes (shipped July 30, 2026), which only QR Planet has since matched in our index.

One rents you reach. The other hands you a file.

Since this page first ran, that distinction stopped being theoretical on our own watch: in August 2026 we created a free code on a third-party generator whose download turned out to be a vendor redirect, and by day ten its link served an expiry page instead of our URL. The full timeline is in our QRStuff review. A Uniqode subscription is a managed version of that same dependency, with a company you can hold to it; a QR Code Monkey file is the escape from the dependency altogether.

Free against subscription

QR Code Monkey’s free is total: the generator, the design tools and every export format cost nothing, and there is no paid tier of its own to upsell you into. The dynamic and statistics buttons route to a separate paid platform, which is the business model, and it stays out of your way.

Uniqode has no free tier at all. Its pricing is published: entry starts at $9 a month billed yearly for 15 dynamic codes, verified August 10, 2026, so the smallest real commitment is about $108 up front, and we found no monthly billing option on the page. The full tier math sits in our Uniqode review, along with a dated correction on our first pass at that pricing page, and its row now stands in our pricing index.

Uniqode’s trial dynamic codes become inactive after 14 days without a paid subscription, according to the pricing FAQ on The QR Code Generator, its sister site. We recorded the answer on September 4, 2026 and rechecked it September 11. The policy is documented; we have not tested a Uniqode account through expiry.

Correction, September 11, 2026: this comparison previously treated the expiry answer as unknown and implied that having no permanent free plan removed the risk. Trial codes can still be printed and then deactivated.

Types, design and analytics

On breadth, Uniqode wins: 20+ types against 14, and the gap includes the categories that need a server, like file hosting and multimedia. On design at zero cost, QR Code Monkey holds its own: custom shapes, logo embedding, templates, and the vector exports that print shops actually ask for. Gradients do not survive its PDF and EPS output, which we hit in testing, so flatten to solid colors before sending vector to print.

Analytics is not a comparison, it is a wall. QR Code Monkey reports nothing, by design: no scan counts, no locations, nothing to report when there is no server. Uniqode holds the highest analytics mark we have given any tool: time, location and device through dashboards, with AI-generated insights since July 30, 2026. If proving scan behavior to a client or a boss is part of the job, only one of these two can do the job at all. The free workaround, if all you need is a rough count, is UTM tags on a URL you control, which works with any static code and costs nothing.

The verdict

For a code pointing at a destination that will not move, QR Code Monkey is the whole answer: free, decoded clean in our test, print-ready, and permanent by construction. Nobody can pause it, because nobody operates it.

For editable destinations, scan data, team workflows or a compliance-reviewed deployment, Uniqode is the stronger platform we score in that category. Budget for a subscription that outlives every printed artifact, because with dynamic codes, the print run and the subscription are one product.

If you are unsure which side of the boundary you are on, our free QR code generators guide walks through the static-versus-dynamic decision before naming any tool, and the full ranking shows where both land once every criterion is weighted.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uniqode better than QR Code Monkey?

They are different products wearing the same acronym. Uniqode is a subscription platform for editable, tracked codes, with the deepest analytics we score and a published compliance list. QR Code Monkey is a free generator for permanent static codes, which we downloaded and decoded ourselves on August 7, 2026. Better depends on one question: does the destination ever need to change? If no, QR Code Monkey costs nothing. If yes, only Uniqode can do it.

Is QR Code Monkey really free when Uniqode is not?

Yes, and the difference is structural rather than promotional. A static code has no server behind it, so QR Code Monkey has nothing to meter and nothing to bill. We downloaded a 1155px PNG with no account on August 7, 2026. Uniqode sells redirects and analytics, which run on its infrastructure, so it charges: no free tier, a 14-day trial, then paid tiers from $9 a month billed yearly, verified August 10, 2026.

Can Uniqode codes expire?

Uniqode trial dynamic codes become inactive after 14 days without a paid subscription. This is documented in the pricing FAQ on its sister site, The QR Code Generator, recorded September 4, 2026 and rechecked September 11; we have not tested expiry in an account. Paid dynamic codes depend on Uniqode maintaining the redirect service and the plan remaining active. QR Code Monkey’s direct static codes have no provider expiry mechanism, though the destination must remain available.
